Thomas Van Dyck

Thomas has been a leader in the field of socially-responsible investing since starting at Dean Witter in 1983. In 1987, he founded Progressive Asset Management (PAM), a firm dedicated to socially responsible investing. At PAM, Van Dyck created the firm's shareholder advocacy program. Joining Piper Jaffray in 1997, he developed an investment management consulting team, now called the SRI Wealth Management Group, which moved to RBC Wealth Management in 2006. Van Dyck has authored numerous articles and studies on the economics of socially responsible investing. He has been actively involved in cleantech investing and was instrumental in developing Piper Jaffray's Cleantech Ventures private equity fund of funds strategy. Throughout his career, he has worked to encourage major pension funds like CalPERS and CalSTRS to consider issues such as divestment from South Africa and environmental investment strategies.

Van Dyck is the founder of As You Sow*, a shareholder advocacy foundation, and is active with environmental groups, including Rainforest Action Network, Baykeeper, Bioneers and Earth Rights International. He is most proud, however, of his role of active parent to his two children. Van Dyck graduated from Duke University in 1980 with a B.A. in Political Science. He is a Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA®) and is Series 7 and Series 66 licensed.

Catherine has significant corporate finance and institutional advisory experience and has been in the investment field since 1993. Before joining RBC Wealth Management, she was part of the SRI Wealth Management Group at Piper Jaffray where she advised foundation, non-profit organizations and high net worth individuals on socially responsible investments. Prior to Piper Jaffray, Catherine worked with J.P. Morgan as an investment banker covering the healthcare, natural resources and technology sectors. During her tenure at J.P. Morgan, Catherine advised clients on over $5 billion of M&A, project finance and equity and fixed income underwriting transactions. She was based in the New York, San Francisco, and Hong Kong offices, and has expertise in advising multi-national companies. Prior to that, she was an analyst in the International Banking Department of Chinatrust Commercial Bank in Taiwan, part of one of the largest conglomerates in Taiwan. She performed investment analysis for a variety of project finance transactions and assisted in the establishment of the firm's Hong Kong office.

Catherine is a former Board member of the Children's Council of San Francisco, a non-profit childcare referral and resource center, and Advisory Board member for the Women's Funding Network. She is a graduate of U.C. Berkeley and has a BA in both Economics and History where she is a Cal Alumni Scholar. She is also a Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA®), a designation she earned from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. She is Series 7 and 66 registered.


Maryann Simpson

Since 1987, Maryann has advised clients and been a leader in the socially responsible investment community. She develops comprehensive social investment strategies for foundations, non-profit organizations and high net-worth individuals. Maryann brings over 35 years of social activism in the LGBT and women's communities to her approach. Many of her clients are individuals and organizations active in the social justice community. She is a member of the Unitarian Church and frequently volunteers her time to underserved communities. She serves on the advisory boards for Girl's Source, the Civil Marriage Collaborative and the Economic Development and Justice (EDJe) Circle. She is also a finance committee member for the Horizon's Foundation. She and her partner of 30 years are the proud mothers of their daughter. Maryann is Series 7 and 66 registered.


Joshua Levine

Joshua holds the professional designation of Accredited Investment FiduciaryTM (AIF®). Designees of the AIF® work with institutions to understand and articulate the legal and regulatory environment surrounding fiduciaries, develop and implement an effective investment management process applying the principles of Modern Portfolio Theory, document all due diligence, and above all, treat their clients with the utmost prudence and care.

He received his Bachelor’s of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles, and his Master’s degree in Environmental Science and Management from the Donald Bren School of Environmental Science & Management at the University of California, Santa Barbara. In between these programs, he was an Associate with the leveraged finance division of Scotia Capital in New York City.

In addition to his professional activities, Joshua is actively involved in environmental and social organizations in the San Francisco Bay community. He currently sits on the Board of Directors for: Urban Releaf, a youth-based organization whose goals are beautification and tree planting in low- to moderate income communities; and the Green Chamber of Commerce, an a sustainable business league that provides networking and political advocacy for its constituents.


Amberjae Freeman
Client Associate

Amberjae earned her B.A. and M.A. degrees in Global & International Studies at UC Santa Barbara where she focused on socio-economic and political processes within sub-Saharan Africa and the Caribbean. While working on her M.A., Amberjae received a fellowship to work with the Clinton Global Initiative in New York City and conducted research analyzing agricultural industrialization models with the Clinton Hunter Development Initiative in Kigali, Rwanda.

Upon completion of her graduate work, she served as an Adjunct Professor of Political Science and Economics at Santa Barbara City College. Prior to joining the SRI Wealth Management Group, she worked with the Center for Gender & Refugee Studies (CGRS) at the UC Hastings College of the Law, a legal services organization that focuses on gender-based asylum claims in San Francisco, C.A.


Kelly Mackey
Client Associate

Kelly provides operational and administrative support to the team and clients. She had been working with other teams in the San Francisco RBC Wealth Management office prior to joining our group. Previously, Kelly spent several years as a Media Planner in New York. She is originally from Boston and is a graduate of Pennsylvania State University. Outside of work, she is a recreational runner. She has completed several marathons, including the Nike San Francisco Marathon which she participated in with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training.
